Do You Want To Be Healed?

It's a big question that even Jesus asked of a paralyzed man who seemed to want that, but maybe not. Many of us become accustomed to being helped, especially in our modern culture where it seems we're protected by society from every one of life's little bumps and bruises. Right now in my country, there are many people who borrowed money they couldn't afford to buy homes they couldn't afford, who are now at risk of losing their homes. Instead of letting this happen and give them an opportunity to learn from the experience, many are talking about taking money from those of us who were responsible and give it to the others.
Whether you're politically for this or not isn't the issue. The spiritual issue we're discussing today is whether someone wants to be healed or just help, sympathy or support to stay in their unhealed state. Those who would want to be healed would not accept help paying their mortgage, even if it meant losing the home. We come across many who seem to want to be healed but really just want to be supported while sick. It's common among addicts and their families, where helping them is really harming them because it frees up their resources for more drugs. The question we need to ask is the same one Jesus asked, "Do you want to be healed?" If their answer is, "yes," then, rather than spending money feeding or clothing or paying rent, spend time showing them how to, "Pick up their own mat and walk."
