If a little is good, a lot is better, right? Wrong! Obsession is a drive that consumes you. We addicts can obsess on anything. A piece of salami....no...a pound. All 20 novels in the series. Winning mercilessly at Monopoly. You name it, I can obsess on it. We have complimentary words for people who obsess on playing sports...a good athlete, or work...a go-getter, or social work...a humanitarian. or education...a scholar. In the end, though, as objects of obsession, these things are as harmful as drugs. Obsession means we lose our balance, unable to put things in their place. People who obsess, generally, get no satisfaction out of the object of their obsession. It's the pursuit of that object that drives them, never to be satisfied, no matter how much they acquire.
For those of use who suffer from the tendency to obsess, let me tell you...Monopoly is much more fun if you don't care so much who wins. We have to understand our tendency and manage ourselves. In fact, you're allowed to obsess on not being obsessive.
