My friend (Christy) and her guy (Mike) have been dating for a while. We've all been going to church together, and he's a nice guy. They have not been sexually involved and are planning to wait until marriage. His roommate situation isn't great and she ask what I thought if he moved in. He stayed overnight with her before and I think their faith is really strong. I'm wondering what verse I can share with them, before they make their decision final. I can only find verses that say things like 'God's family should live together', and nothing saying 'do not live together'.

Any scripture-based advice (with chapter/verses) that I can pass along, would be great.

Thanks. smile.gif

(P.S. =Their names aren't really Christy and Mike. So if you know a "Christy & Mike", it's NOT them! Don't approach them with advice.)

I appreciate your concern for your friends. I would like to first share some insight into human nature. God has designed men to be sexually aroused by visual stimulation. Women are aroused by verbal stimulation and touch. Being in the same living space, i.e. apartment or house, can cause the temptation of sexual desire to rise. I am not doubting their desire and determination to remain sexually pure until they are married. The problem is that Satan goes about like a roaring lion. Read I Peter 5:8-9. Satan will give them all kinds of excuses why it is ok to let down their guard. One of the most popular one is, "We are going to get married and we are practically married now." "It is only a piece of paper." The problem is that it is more than a piece of paper. The word Fornication means any kind of sexual relationship outside of the context of marriage. God designed the marital relationship as the boundaries for sex. Paul issues a warning in I Corinthians 10:1-13. Verses 11 and 12 are a dire warning to your friends: "These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think that you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall." The main point is that once your friends are alone, behind closed doors which can keep out anyone they wish. Satan will begin to tempt them to participate in sexual activity. It may begin as innocent as a long impassioned kiss. Then an accidental touching which felt good and then became more often. Then "petting" can occur. It can continue down this slippery slope until it culminates in sexual intercourse. None of it was intentional. But Satan is a father of lies and he knows mankind very well. He was able to tempt Adam and Eve. He can tempt your friends, too. I will close this long post with the warning once more: If you think that you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall. May God give them wisdom in their search for the answer to their challenge.

Hello, I agree with Daniel above! To add to what's been said, I did find some verses, but not particularly on "abstinent living," more like Christian living.

1) Living on the same property may not equal to sinning, but what will other members of the Body interpret from this?
But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. (1 Cor 8:9) read the entire chapter helps.
Although the context of this verse was concerning eating food as if it was sacrificed to idol and the costume of that, I think it could be anything. In this case, it would be the appearance of your unmarried friends living together. Will someone be stumbled in the Body of Christ?
Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. (1 Cor 8:13)
I would say the same goes with this situation.

2) When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. (Luke 4:13)
Until an opportune time, the devil is searching for every opportunity to tempt us. Let us not near those situations where temptation is likely!

3) Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matt 26:41)
Never underestimate how quick we fall...

Hope the situation will work out according to God's will!
