Numbers 18:21-24 King James Version (KJV)
21 And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
22 Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
24 But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

Numbers 18:21-24 Amplified Bible (AMP)

21 “Behold, I have given the Levites all the tithe in Israel as an inheritance, in return for their service which they perform, the service of the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle).22 The Israelites shall never again approach the Tent of Meeting [the covered sanctuary, the Holy Place, and the Holy of Holies], or they [who do] will incur sin and die.23 Only the Levites shall perform the service of the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle), and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that the Levites shall have no inheritance [of land] among the children of Israel. 24 But the tithe of the Israelites, which they present as an offering to the LORD, I have given to the Levites as an inheritance; therefore I have said to them, ‘They shall have no inheritance among the children of Israel.’”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

21 They were to be given the tithe this not what was given to God but the part of what was given to God that they were to take, people would be bringing things to the temple and the priests would live off of it, the sad thing is when the people did not serve God as they should have the Levites would not have anything, but often during this time the other tribes would not have things grow due to their rebellion against God, there came a point where some of the Levities would work in the field to gain food because someone else was taking theirs, this is not what God intended. God’s plan was for the Levites to serve Him and live off of what the other tribes brought.

22 The other tribes were not to go into the Tent but remain within a certain around it where the priests then would meet them, they would worship God else where but bring the offering to the priests outside the tent.

23 This priest would be corrupted by the time of Christ and Christ’s death would do away with the need for priests because we do not have to look to a man to help us give an offering because God offered His own Son Jesus for us as the perfect and finally sacrifice.

24 The Levities would live in the tent of meeting later the temple as well as cities of refuge later; they would not own land but live in places for service of the Lord and live off tithes. Today we all can serve God and work as well, but there are still those that only live off of what God gives them thru tithes.
