Acts 9:1-4 King James Version (KJV)
9 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,
2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Acts 9:1-4 Amplified Bible (AMP)
The Conversion of Saul

9 Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord [and relentless in his search for believers], went to the high priest,2 and he asked for letters [of authority] from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any men or women there belonging to the Way [believers, followers of Jesus the Messiah], men and women alike, he could arrest them and bring them bound [with chains] to Jerusalem. 3 As he traveled he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him [displaying the glory and majesty of Christ]; 4 and he fell to the ground and heard a voice [from heaven] saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting and oppressing Me?”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

1 Saul at this time still viewed the high priest as the man who directly went to God, this hadn’t been true since Christ ministry started and the priest had no purpose for good at this point. Saul takes it on himself to end the church.

2 At this point the church was mainly Jewish people so they were going to the synagogues sharing the gospel and for worship of the Lord. So Saul is having the high priest set a trap for the converts that the disciples won because they hadn’t yet started their own worship services so rather then go to some pagan worship they continued worshiping God in a house that was build to worship God.

3 Light often symbolizes or shows God’s presence. This light could not be looked at, scripture says that seeing this light would burn us up so God shows mercy to Saul by letting him continue to live.

4 God talked to Saul, God often can speak to people out loud or to us thru others or thru what happens but when He speaks we need to listen and we need to learn when it is Him speaking.

To be persecuted is to follow after Christ.
