Numbers 20:14-17 King James Version (KJV)
14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:
15 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
16 And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

Numbers 20:14-17 Amplified Bible (AMP)

14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of ]Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel, ‘You know all the hardship that has come upon us [as a nation];15 that our fathers (ancestors) went down to Egypt, and we lived there for a long time, and the Egyptians treated [both] us and our fathers badly. 16 But when we cried out to the LORD [for help], He heard us and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through a field or through a vineyard; we will not even drink water from a well. We will go along the king’s highway, not turning [off-course] to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.’”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

14 Edomites were descendents of Jacob’s brother Esau. The hard times were the times in Egypt. The Edomites were also one of the groups they were not supposed to drive out of the land because of them being descended from Abraham.

15 The Edomites may have known this already but it’s being restated. They were in Egypt for generations.

16 So Moses is letting them know they are near. They were attending to go to the promise land but due to their lack of faith they wouldn’t go for another 40 years.

17 He was asking just to pass thru, they would not use anything of theirs but they just needed to get thru.
