Probably the most limiting and demeaning thing I inherited from my father was a pessimistic attitude. It isn't genetic, but learned behavior. Form the time I was born until the time he died, I learned that there was no opportunity for regular people, that business people cheat to succeed, that people of certain different races were naturally superior or inferior to us, that if it didn't come easy we weren't talented enough to do it, etc. etc.
He was wrong! It took me 35 years to realize he was wrong and several years to reprogram myself to a more optimistic way of thinking. I now know, with the exception of a few issues, optimism is always the right approach. I've learned there is an amazing amount of opportunity for everyone if they focus on what they want to do and love to do instead of what the crowd is doing. I've learned that the vast majority of business owners are honest, very hard-working and get paid less than the average employee. I've learned that people of every race have different gifts and talents, and that none are inferior or superior. I've learned that everything that is worth doing is hard, but if you're willing to work and sacrifice, you can succeed at it despite the difficulty.
Optimism has taken over my life, leading me to greater and greater achievements, all of which, I originally thought were impossible to me. I believe there is a great Force for good operating in the world, and if we choose to pursue the good, we will get unexpected and miraculous help from that Force. I believe, no matter how bad things look, or how bad they are, everything will work out just fine. I believe you are capable of achieving any dream you have, regardless of the obstacles, if you don't quit. I am an unapologetic optimist.
