In Bible College, one of the lessons they tried to teach me was, to share the Word of God, you have to be subtle, and "sneak up" on the audience. The book suggested couching God's lessons in jokes and entertaining anecdotes. If I've just described your minister, you're not alone. The premise behind this style is that people will no longer tolerate hearing the direct message...only an entertaining one. I don't agree with the premise. The books all say that Jesus used parables to make His points understandable, but the Bible says the opposite.
This drive among ministers to be entertaining and popular is so common, it's rare to find anyone who just opens the Bible and starts teaching from it. Entertainment may be necessary to meet the modern church business model that requires enough regular givers to pay for a large mortgage and church staff. The problem is, entertainment is becoming the goal rather than a means to the goal.
I've seen messages on forgiveness that don't even mention Jesus or God. I've seen messages that use no Bible quotes or principles and more closely resemble cult teachings. Even those that do use Scripture, often use it out of context to make whatever point they wanted to make. So...Samson becomes a vengeful child instead of God's salvation for Israel. David and Goliath becomes a story about good battle strategy instead of faith in God.
It's become increasingly clear to me over the years, that we're living in the last days, when people will no longer put up with the Word of God but have gathered around them false teachers who will say whatever their itching ears want to hear. Don't be entertained...be inspired.
