I guess, like anyone in their 50's, I've had an extensive history with illness. Pneumonia many times, mono, hernia surgery, broken bones, anxiety, phobias, depression, numerous addictions, hypertension, stress disorder, asthma and diabetes. I'm still fighting the chronic ones...hypertension, asthma and diabetes.
Unlike most people, I refuse to give up. Asthma often leaves me unable to breathe, so, I decided to exercise more to increase my lung capacity. Of course, I have to resist those wonderful, flavorful foods that aggravate my asthma. The exercise helps with my hypertension, too. Sure glad I quit smoking almost 18 years ago. About 6 years ago, I was very overweight (50 pounds heavier) and had severe back pain that kept me from walking most days. I decided to exercise, despite the pain, and over the course of a few weeks, literally exercised the back pain away.
Diabetes has me exhausted and hungry most of the time. Most people don't know, but diabetes causes, literally, a physical addiction to food...and all the wrong food. Instead of accepting medicine, I decided to diet and exercise to control the disease and did great the first year. Then I got lazy, allowed my weight to plateau and the disease started to get out of control again. 7 months ago, I started a new routine of diet and exercise, and have lost 20 pounds and gotten my blood sugar back into the normal range.
My experience with illness has caused me to be compassionate with those suffering and struggling to carve out a normal life despite the physical limitations of disease. My experience has also caused me to be unsympathetic of those who use illness as an excuse to give up, or who refuse to do the things they can do, to overcome their limitations. If you're a fighter, you'll have me in your corner all the way. If you're a whiner, you won't like me very much.
