Here in the USA, we've been raised with so much exposure to evangelists and evangelism that we've got a stilted view of what it is...and isn't. First, we believe evangelism requires training..."Don't try this at home!" You must be a minister, right? You have to preach, have to use a Bible, have to approach strangers, have to take people to "crusades," etc. None of it is true! In fact, those traditional evangelism methods have been so overdone in the USA that people are naturally resistant to them. Those inside are so conditioned that they "respond" again and again, giving a false impression of people being reached. Those outside the church usually don't respond because they are desensitized. So, how do we reach those people?
We reach them by doing what Jesus did and what he said to do. The Bible never records one place where Jesus told people they were sinners and needed to repent. What did He do? He was their friend, went to their parties, drank their wine, healed them, fed them and helped them. In fact, the only people He preached against were the religious leaders. By following the example of Jesus, we are fulfilling His instruction to us when He said, "Let your light shine so much that they will see your good works and praise your Father in heaven." How much training does it take to be good to people?
