I can't tell you how many people take one part of Scripture or another and use it to twist their marriage relationship or to manipulate or enslave their spouse. Some just rely on the strong stance against divorce so they can treat a Christian spouse any way they want. What's funny and sad about this is how wonderful God's marriage model is and how much joy we would have if we just followed it. Let me give you a brief outline: 1. We are to leave our old family and join with our spouse. 2. We are to be loyal to that spouse. 3. Each of us (man and woman) is to submit to each other and to consider each other's needs more important than our own. 4. Men are to take the lead by sacrificing their own needs for that of their wives. 5. We can divorce in the event of adultery, or if our non-Christian spouse wants a divorce. This would include violent abusers, molesters and out-of-control addicts. Even if they haven't asked for divorce, their behavior suggests a desire for something other than marriage.
