How Do You Know If God's Punishing You Or Testing You? Options

If unfavorable circumstances come your way because God's testing you, then He's commending you for having a faith in Him that's strong enough to withstand the storms so He's saying that you're doing something right and keep it up even in tough times, however, if God's using circumstances to discipline you then He's saying that there's something you're doing that needs to stop or change. So when bad things happen, how do you know which of the above it is?
