Not having kids of my own, you may find it a little bold for me to be advising others on raising theirs. Still, I believe I'm on solid ground with this one. Being a minister, I've seen and counseled a lot of parents who want to raise Christian kids. Some of them just show up and drop them off at a church on Sunday Morning or other "Christian" function. Others, a little more zealous, follow the latest Churchy fads on how to raise kids "God's Way." Though all of these parents are well-meaning, most of them will fail at this goal. How can I make such an assertion? Because the chief ingredient to raising Christian children is missing in most families, when they get back home and put on their normal clothes and lives. The reason most of these children won't grow up to be Christians is because there is no example at home of how a Christian lives. I'm not just talking about the Mom who drops her kid off at a church, but also those who wouldn't miss a church service. The children grow up thinking Christianity is fake because most parents are faking it. What you do speaks so loudly they can't hear what you say. Want to raise Christian children? Live it for them! Rely on faith, not religious rules and regulations. Develop a love for God's Word, and don't tolerate anyone in authority teaching something else. Make worship, Bible study and prayer a focus in home life, rather than assignments for the kids. Teach them that it's OK to question those in high position...even to question you if they feel you're not following God's leadership in an area. Blind "respect" for authority is what got us the Holocaust. If you love Christ, they will learn to love Him. If you worship God at home...when no one but He and they are looking, your children will worship Him and respect you.
